I’ve been a lover of languages and communication as far back as I can remember. At age 14, I decided I’d pursue a college degree in Translation & Interpretation. Although I was allowed to use academic credits to take additional languages (French, German, and Russian), my major focused on what I call my top 3 languages.
These are the languages that I mainly work with as a language professional offering translation, editing, interpretation, and transcription services:
ENGLISH is a Germanic language that was first spoken in England. At present, it’s considered a global lingua franca. It’s the de facto official language in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. English is also the primary language in several countries, such as Canada and Ireland. More than 50 sovereign states and 20 non-sovereign entities throughout the world have it as an official language. There are around 400 million people that are native English speakers. It’s estimated that more than an additional 600 million people have it as a second language. English is my second language, even though I’ve been using it as my primary language for several years, especially after becoming a U.S. resident in 2016.
CATALAN (català) is a Romance language that is mostly used in Catalonia, Andorra, Roussillon (southwestern France), Spain’s regions of Aragon, Valencia (where the language is known as valencià) and the Balearic Islands, and the city of Alghero in Sardinia (Italy). A fun fact about Catalan is that it has more speakers than Bulgarian, Danish, Irish, Finnish, Slovakian, Lithuanian, Slovenian, Latvian, Estonian, and Maltese. More than 9 million people are fluent in Catalan, of which over 4 million have it as their first language. I’m originally from Barcelona, where I lived for a total of 15 years. I attended college and developed part of my professional career there. Catalan is my first language.
SPANISH (español) is a Romance language that originated in the Castile region of Spain. That’s why it’s also known as Castilian (castellano). Today, Spanish is official in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It’s also spoken in Andorra, Belize, United States, and Western Sahara. There seem to be more than 500 million Spanish speakers, of which at least 300 million are native speakers. Born to a Spanish-speaking family who emigrated from Spain’s regions of Castile and Extremadura, I’ve lived in places like Aragon and Galicia. Spanish was my native language.
