Medications as Diagnostic Agents

Can medications be used as diagnostic agents?

Yes!

I was recently asked about this, and the first thing that came to mind was radiopharmaceuticals.

Radiopharmaceuticals are radioactive medications that are often used together with imaging procedures to diagnose medical problems.

In this case, the patient only receives a small amount of radiation, which is considered safe.

That radioactivity can be detected and monitored with imaging devices, which allows the specialist to study how a specific part of the body is working.

Imaging is my favorite medical specialty!

As a medical translator and writer, I’ve been focusing on imaging for the last two years. The following is a list of courses and seminars that I’ve taken/attended:

  • Contrast Media in Medical Imaging (American Society of Radiologic Technologists)

  • Fundamental Neuroscience for Neuroimaging (The Johns Hopkins University)

  • Imaging for Translators and Interpreters (Blue Urpi)

  • Introduction to Biomedical Imaging (The University of Queensland)

  • Radiographic Densities: Why Adipose Tissue Matters (American Society of Radiologic Technologists)

  • Translating Diagnostic Imaging (American Translators Association)
