New Service: Subtitling

By the time I completed my licentiate in Translation and Interpreting in 2010 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), I had enrolled in a master's in audiovisual translation.

I was (and still am) a fan of movies and series, so I thought I would specialize in dubbing, subtitling, and voiceover. Yet, life took me down a different path (i.e., financial translation and social media management) before relocating to the United States in 2016.

Long story short — I never finished that master's degree at the Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción (ISTRAD), and I ended up choosing medicine as my specialization.

Nonetheless, I managed to complete the following modules:

  • Subtitling and Dubbing — Principles and Theory

  • Translation Techniques Applied to Subtitling

  • Translation Techniques for the Hard of Hearing and Deaf

In my first years as a freelancer, I offered subtitling services, but I never got to do it regularly. Once I decided to focus only on medical texts, I stopped subtitling. The last time I did it was in 2018.

Fortunately, subtitling is like riding a bicycle — you never forget.

Last month, I was asked if I could take care of a subtitling project. I agreed to take a paid test and passed it with flying colors. Subtitling was and is still a good fit!

Years ago, my go-to programs were Aegisub and Subtitle Workshop. At present, I am using SubtitleEdit; and thanks to this software, I have completed the following projects since April started:

  • Seven videos of private interviews for a marketing project totaling 78 minutes (Spanish into English)

  • Two chapters for an upcoming series totaling 67 minutes (Catalan and Spanish into English)

Additionally, I recently took a TranslaStars course to enhance my subtitling skills as part of my CPD activities.

TranslaStars Certificate of Completion certifying that Antoni Maroto successfully completed the course "How to create error-free subtitles."

Now I am open to working on subtitling projects, especially those involving medical content, which (as you know) is my specialty.
